Rumors Finally Put to Rest with the Dell Mini 3
Simon Drew asked:
For the past two years rumors about Dell deviating from their established mode of business has been going on so it did not come as a surprise when Dell officially announced the release of its Dell Mini3; an Android-based smart phone that they intend to compete with the smart phones from Apple, Blackberry, HTC, Samsung and Motorola; in one of their shows in China.
The news were met with skepticism specially that other Dell manufactured devices other than their computers did not fare as well in the market as their computers.
A smart phone from a trusted brand
Dell has always been one of the leading manufacturers of computers and according to them, finding their niche in the PDA business is essential to their growth. Their announcement that the Dell Mini3 will not be initially available in the United States further strengthen popular opinion that this smart phone might not be able to compete with the other established PDAs and smart phones in the market.
Dell also mentioned that its Dell mini3 would be launched in Brazil through Claro of American Movil and China through its biggest carrier, China Mobile. This OPhone-based device (Chinese Android) that measures 58.35 x 122 x 11.7mm first appeared in China. It will be officially launched in these two countries before the year ends and price is expected to be around £300.
The Dell Mini 3’s Specifications
The Dell Mini3 will be operating in 3G GSM 850/1900 network in Brazil and 2G UMTS 850/1900 network in China. It has TFT capacitive touch screen in 256k colors that allows users to view their cell phone even in direct sunlight. Its screen is at 3.5 inches (maybe the name Dell Mini3, which is just following their usual method of naming their devices by the size of their monitors) at 360 x 640 pixels, with accelerometer sensor for auto-rotate and multi-touch input method. It uses the same display as the Nokia N97.
Its alert types are in 3 categories- Vibration, MP3 and WAV ring tones. It has practically unlimited entries for phonebooks, photocalls and call records. Its memory can be expandable with the inclusion of a MicroSD memory card slot. It has both class 10 GPRS and EDGE. It has WIFI 802.11 b/g broadband capabilities, Bluetooth v2.0 with A2DP and MicroUSB v2.0.
It has 3.15 mega pixel auto-focus, geo-tagging camera with video recording capabilities and has A-GPS support. It has MP4/H.263/H.264/WMV player, MP3/e-AAC+/WMA player, Google Search, Maps, Gmail, Calendar, Google Talk integration and Voice memo.
Comparison with Apple iPhone
Most noticeable comment regarding the Dell Mini3 is its similarities with the ever-popular Apple iPhone. It operates the same way, has almost the same applications, and is as user friendly as the iPhone. It does not look as sleek as the iPhone though. It comes in oiled bronze and red passion colored mobile phones.
With this much hype, it would be expected to fare as well as the Apple iPhone and with its Linux-based OS, that makes usage of this phone not a problem.
