World’s No.1 PC maker Hewlett-Packard (HP) has announced that it is expanding a voluntary recall of laptop batteries that tend to overheat and catch fire by 54,000.

HP said the recalls involved China-made lithium-ion HP laptop batteries that came with laptops purchased globally in stores and online from August 2007 through July 2008. The defective batteries were also sold separately.

The company said that “less than 3 percent” of the laptops contained the defective batteries and the affected batteries , which can pose a fire and burn hazard, will be replaced for free.

“HP fully stands behind the products it makes and has taken a proactive approach to this situation to ensure the safety of our customers and the integrity and quality of our products,” the company said in a statement.

HP had announced an initial recall 70,000 overheated ACER laptop batteries in May 2009 but the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said HP has received additional reports of batteries that tend to overheat and catch fire, prompting it to expand its recall to include a total number of 31 laptop models.

The commission said the initial recall was prompted by 2 complaints while the subsequent recall was prompted by 38 additional complaints that the batteries overheated and ruptured, injuring those who handled the laptops.

However, the latest recall pales in comparison to what is being billed as the largest computer-related recall in history – the recalls of 10 million Sony batteries announced between 2006 and 2008. In August 2006, following complaints, Dell laptop battery recalled over 4 million laptop batteries made by Sony, prompting Apple, Toshiba and Fujitsu to recall 1.8 million, 340,000 and 338,000 laptop batteries respectively. Other PC makers like Lenovo, Acer, Sharp and Sanyo announced recalls that ranged from 28,000 to 700,000.

CPSC spokesman Scott Wolfson said generally batteries can overheat and rupture if they’re charged too long or if the laptops don’t have a good ventilation system to regulate the excess heat.

Experts agree. When handled improperly, some rechargeable batteries can experience thermal runaway (a situation where an increase in temperature changes the conditions in a way that causes a further increase in temperature), resulting in overheating, the experts said. Especially prone to thermal runaway are lithium-ion batteries, they added.

Shares of NYSE-listed Palo Alto, California-based HP, which posted a 28 percent jump in Q2 net profit last week, closed 1.37 percent up at $46.58 on Friday.

The direction below will help teach you how to remove laptop keyboard and replace it. This article doesn’t cover all models, but you may get a rough meaning, the disassembling steps are proper for most laptops.

Warning:

-If your laptop is still within the promised warrant period, then please don’t take your laptop apart, otherwise, you may lose the promise of quality warrant.

-Before you open your laptop, please first remove the laptop battery and pull off ac adapter for laptop.

-If you break the keyboard faucet on the motherboard by accident, then you’d have to replace the entire motherboard.

-You should take the responsibility of the result.

This is HP/Compaq NC6120 keyboard, and this method is also proper for other model laptops.

The indicator cover and the hinge cover are in one piece and is screw-less in this laptop. Many others laptops the hinges cover are separate from the indicator cover.

There are common also that screws are found underneath the indicator cover or behind the hinge covers.

In this case, there’s no need to remove the baffle of the keyboard, however, for many other models, you have to follow the next steps: insert a little screwdriver under the keyboard baffle, lift it carefully and then put plastic clip into it, and then move the laptop replacement keyboard baffle with your fingers; be careful, as some model baffles might be connected to motherboard with cable. If you just pull out the cable incautiously, then you have to plug it back again, to remove the keyboard, it’s not that necessary to disconnect the keyboard baffle from motherboard. You’d just need to release the baffle and then you could see the screws used to fasten the keyboard

Remove screws and latches.

Just as the picture 3 shows, you could find the screws used to fasten keyboard from the back cover of the laptop, 2 in all, and generally, there should be 2 to 4 screws on common laptops. And beside the screw fastening hp laptop keyboard, there marks some sign; under certain circumstance, Hinge cover has screws to frap keyboard. However, this tutorial doesn’t involve relevant case, hope you could notice that.

Push latches downward.

As picture 4 shows below, you could find some latches on the laptop keyboard, total 4 latches, beside the key F1, F4, F8 and F12, use a little flat screwdriver to slide down gently.

And as picture 5 shows below, lift the keyboard from the motherboard, once the HP/Compaq NC6120 Keyboard is moved and the flat connection cable between the keyboard and motherboard exposes. And before you pull the flat connection cable out of interface, first unlock the connection cable-lock.

As picture 6 shows below, it illustrates how to unlock the keyboard cable-lock, and move it 1-2mm cautiously.

Attention:

lift up the cable-lock on both ends by not more than 1mm. Over lifting would break the clips that function to position the cable in place.

As picture 7 shows below, now it’s the time for the HP NC6120 Keyboard to get off from laptop, and then pull the connection cable out of it. And when install the keyboard, follow the steps above just by the opposite sequence.

A laptop is the ideal replacement for your desktop computer. The greatest advantage of a laptop is its portability. Unlike desktop computers, you can easily move a laptop around your home, carry it to work or class and take it with you when you travel. Laptops are a big investment, so before buying one, you should consider many factors like the manufacturer, performance and features.
What kind of laptop user are you?
A home user wants all the features of a desktop PC in the form of a notebook. If you are a home user, then choose a notebook which is easy to carry and comes with the most basic computer applications. Students should opt for an affordable laptop which is light and durable. Frequent fliers need slim notebook models with long-lasting batteries. A business user should purchase a laptop with plenty of hard disk space and advanced security features while a gamer needs a fast processor and the latest graphics card.
What are the different kinds of laptop computers available?
Laptops for Entertainment:
Multimedia laptops are always more expensive and heavier than your standard model. These laptops come with a powerful processor, abundant memory and a large hard drive. You can use these laptops as a mobile DVD player, MP3 jukebox and a digital photo album. If you buy a TV tuner card, you can even use your multimedia notebook as a television set. These notebooks are ideal for PC gaming.
Laptops for Business:
Laptops especially designed for business use are ultra portable. These laptops are durable and more secure than the basic laptop. They are best suited for consumers who are always on the move. A good business laptop should offer a fingerprint reader or SmartCard support to prevent data theft. These notebooks usually have advanced computer applications and wireless capabilities, so you can work even when you are away from your desk.
Laptops for Home:
The home user typically uses a laptop for checking mail and browsing the web. These laptops perform general tasks. A high speed processor is an unnecessary luxury and tends to be wasted on most home users. Opt for a notebook with at least a 14-inch screen and a comfortable keyboard. These laptops are generally heavy, weighing more than 4 kg at times. Their average battery life is less than three hours.
What constitutes a good laptop?
Ergonomics:
If you are going to use your laptop extensively, then you need to be comfortable with the keys. Try a laptop with slightly larger keys to avoid straining your fingers from typing. Most laptops come with a touch pad or a tracking pointer instead of a mouse. If you are a PC gamer, buy a separate mouse which can keep up with the fast-paced action on screen.
Operating Systems:
The Windows XP Media Center Edition is a good operating system for entertainment laptops. It makes optimal use of multimedia features like TV tuners, radio tuners and media players. If you are a professional who prefers Apple notebooks but are concerned about compatibility, check out the dual boot models by Apple that allow you to install and run Windows as well as Mac OS X. If you prefer PCs, Microsoft Vista is an ideal alternative to Windows XP. Vista comes in several editions, including Vista Home Basic and Vista Home Premium for the home user, Vista Business for the professional and Vista Ultimate for the best of both worlds.
Memory and Storage:
All data and applications are stored in the RAM (random access memory). Many laptops commonly use 256 MB of RAM. Most business laptops and entertainment laptops come with 512 MB or more of RAM. The more RAM you buy, the more data you can store.
The hard drive stores all programs and files. For the average home user, a 20 GB hard drive will more than suffice. If you buy a laptop for entertainment or business purposes, a 60 GB hard drive will better serve your needs. Some entertainment laptops even have multiple hard drives for better performance. Hard drives come with different speeds. Most laptop hard drives have a speed of 5,400 rpm. However, faster hard drives go up to 7,200 rpm.
Display:
The size of a laptop is based on the size of the screen. Screen size starts as small as 10.6 inches and goes up to 20 inches diagonally. Most laptops have an LCD monitor. However, if you are using your laptop for CAD, a CRT monitor will serve you just as well, if not better. The screen resolution determines the crispness of your image. A 12.1 inch display uses WXGA resolutions (1,280 by 800). A 14 or 15 inch display typically uses WSXGA+ (1680 by 1,050), although a small number of notebook computers use WUXGA (1,920 by 1,200) instead.
Processor:
It is more difficult to upgrade a notebooks processor than it is to upgrade a desktop computer. For this reason, you should buy a processor with a speed that will best suit your use. Also, it is wise to choose a processor with less battery consumption. Processors with 1.4 to 1.6 Ghz are preferred by most users.
Battery:
Lithium ion batteries are commonly used in laptops. The average battery life is about 3 hours. It takes around 75 minutes to fully recharge a lithium ion battery.
Graphics Card:
A graphics card, sometimes referred to as a video adapter, is responsible for generating the images you see on a laptops display. For businessmen who need to do lot of presentations, a graphics card containing 32 or 64 MB of dedicated memory is the right choice. There are also specially designed cards for gaming. These cards are expensive and should be avoided unless you require excellent graphics.
USB Ports:
Laptop computers come with at least one USB port so that you can connect peripherals to the notebook. Recent models have a FireWire connection that lets you transfer digital information from camcorders or MP3 players.
Optical Drives:
Most laptops come with either a CD-ROM (compact disc, read-only memory), a CD-RW (compact disc, re-writeable) or a DVD-ROM (digital versatile disc, read-only-memory). The DVD+RW/+R with CD-RW is a combination drive which will read a CD or a DVD and write data to a DVD as well.
Modem:
Laptops are available with integrated modems for dial-up connections, Ethernet ports for cable internet and DSL and wireless modems for Wi-Fi connections. Many business laptops also have a cellular wireless modem so you can browse at broadband speeds with just a mobile phone signal.

The best time to choose a new hp dv6000 battery is before the one presently under the hood gives up all together. Unless you left the lights on, or there is an electrical short, automotive batteries will not generally suffer from sudden death. If your vehicle seems to be laboring to turn the starter first have the charging system tested at your local Advance Auto Parts. If the charging system checks out, a dv6000 battery load test will determine if the battery needs maintenance or outright replacement. If replacement is the only option then making the best choice in batteries depends on several different factors. HP / Compaq Pavilion DV6000 Battery 12-cells 8800MAH Description: Cell Type: Li-ion, 12-cells Voltage: 10.8V Capacity: 8800MAH UL certificated cells inside! Laptops tend to lose their charm quickly when you are constantly looking for the nearest power outlet to charge up. How do you keep your battery going for as long as possible? Here are 5 easy ways to do so. 1. 1. Turn the brightness level as low as you possibly. Laptops always come with the ability to select the brightness level, some even could modify CPU cooling performance, switch down to lowest level will enable you squeeze out two times longer hp Pavilion DV6000 Battery 12-cells 8800MAH life than the situation working in the highest level. 2. Shut down programs running automatic. Some of the programs we won’t to use startup in backgroud when you start you OS, like QuickTime, Desktop Search. When expand your taskbar, you can see and shutdown them, but there are also some process invisible in most cases. They consume your laptop computer resourse and HP DV6000 Battery slowly, press “Ctrl” + “Alt” + “Del” to open your tasker manager and halt the process not necessary. 3. 3. Unplug external devices. Normally device, your mouse, and the most power consume device – Mobile hard disk, they drain down your laptop HP Laptop Battery for there get the power supply from the USB port in your laptop. Remove when you aren’t using them, is goes without saying that this will save a lot of power. 4. 4. Hibernate instead of suspend. Suspend mode make your save some power and instantly resume your laptop when you come back, but compare with the Hibernate mode, suspend laptop also running in lower power consumed situation, electricity exhaust is zero in hibernate mode for all your computer’s state were saved before it shutdown. For the convenient reason, you’d better use the hibernate function when leave over 20 minutes. 5. 5. Keep your HP / Compaq Pavilion DV6000 Battery 12-cells 8800MAH clean.

The desktop computer may not be dead, but it’s certainly suffering from life threatening wounds.(dell inspiron 9400 battery)

If the desktop crawled into its nearest field hospital, the triage nurse would have to think very carefully about whether to rush it into surgery, or to lay it down gently in a corner and wait for the inevitable.(HP pavilion zv5000 battery)

It’s impossible to ignore the rise of mobile computing over the past few years. Gone are the days where a notebook computer meant questionable performance and an astronomically high price.(dell latitude d400 battery)

Notebooks are only the tip of the mobile computing iceberg, and the market is quite confusing for anyone who’s looking for a portable PC. Besides all the different notebook form factors – desktop replacement, ultraportable and so on – there’s the increasingly popular netbook category to consider. And as if that isn’t enough, you also have to consider tablets and the new smartbook category.

NB: Smartbook is a registered trademark of Smartbook AG in Germany, but here we are using smartbook as a generic term for a device which falls between smartphone and netbook.

So which platform is right for you? We’ve put together a breakdown of each mobile computing platform, highlighting the benefits and deficits of each, so you can decide which platform is best for you.

The best notebook or best laptop for you

The notebook, or laptop, is the most widely recognised and understood mobile computing device available. Although there are several categories of notebook, they all share distinct similarities, often pertaining to the hardware platform that drives them.

The vast majority of notebooks are based on Intel technology, but systems based on AMD hardware are also available at the lower end of the market. Intel has pretty much dominated the notebook market since it launched the Centrino platform back in 2003.

Not only did Centrino provide notebook manufacturers with a great mobile computing platform to build on, it also made Wi-Fi the de facto feature that it is today.

There are basically three categories of notebook – desktop replacement, ultraportable and, well, general use notebook. The desktop replacement is, as the name suggests, an alternative to a desktop computer.

As such it will come equipped with a large screen, a full size keyboard, perhaps with a full numeric keypad, a powerful CPU and a generous complement of memory.

A desktop replacement notebook will be able to do pretty much anything that a full size PC can, with the exception of playing high-end 3D games (unless it’s a specific gaming notebook).

The downside is that battery life is generally bad, probably bordering on nonexistent. Even if battery life wasn’t bad, the system is likely to be so bulky and heavy that you wouldn’t want to carry it anywhere anyway.

The ultraportable category includes all those slim and sexy models that people like to show off in executive departure lounges, or in Starbucks while they’re sipping a decaf latte. An ultraportable notebook is generally well under 2kg in weight, with many dipping below 1.5kg. They tend to sport screens that are 13.3-inch or smaller, often with LED backlighting to ensure a thin casing.

They often sport low or ultra-low voltage CPUs to ensure that the most time can be squeezed out of the thin and light battery. And they tend to be the design highlight of any notebook manufacturer’s range.

The most obvious downside of the ultraportable notebook is that all that thinness, lightness and gorgeous design comes at a price, and usually a pretty high one.

Also, those low power chips aren’t designed for heavy duty use, and can start to struggle under the weight of excessive multi-tasking. And let’s not forget that the supermodel-thin chassis doesn’t leave much room for features, with many ultraportables having no optical drive and very limited connectivity options.

Thankfully, there is a happy medium, in the shape of the general purpose notebook – the kind of workhorse machine that’s bigger and heavier than an ultraportable, but far smaller and lighter than a desktop replacement. Also, while it’s not as super-powerful as a desktop replacement, it can be far more well endowed in the processing department than an ultraportable.

General purpose notebooks tend to sport 14 or 15-inch screens, along with full sized keyboards, integrated optical drives and plenty of connectivity options around the chassis. They generally weigh around 2.5kg, which means they’re noticeably heavier than an ultraportable, but still light enough to be carried around in a backpack.

It’s always worth taking a close look at the specification of a general purpose notebook though, since some models that look like bargains are often equipped with ageing and underpowered hardware. As a general rule of thumb, anything with an Intel Core processor and upwards of 2GB of RAM should be able to cope with most things you’re likely to throw at it.

You should expect to see a DVD writer built in, at least three USB ports, integrated Wi-Fi and possibly Bluetooth. It’s pretty common to see a webcam built into the lid to facilitate video conferencing too. There was a time when a well built notebook with those features would have set you back over £2,000, but these days you can pickup something from the likes of HP or Samsung for around £600.

When Asus launched its Eee PC back in 2007, it created a whole new product category that took the tech world by storm. Within a matter of months, pretty much every technology company was rushing out a netbook product, to try and grab some of the new market share.

However, whereas the original Eee PC was designed to be a very basic mobile computer at an affordable price, the netbook has evolved into a larger, more feature rich and ultimately more expensive device.

The important thing to remember about a netbook is that no matter what size it is, or how good the screen is, it’s still limited by the hardware inside it. Most netbooks come equipped with Intel’s Atom processor and are limited to 1GB of RAM – the reason for the meagre complement of RAM, is that in order to qualify for a cut price “netbook edition” of Windows, Microsoft insists that a netbook can not ship with more than 1GB! Of course that doesn’t mean you can’t upgrade the memory post purchase.

But even with more memory, a netbook is still suited to basic computing duties, such as email, web browsing and basic document creation. So, if you’re looking to buy a computer that you can use to, say, edit your home movies and photos, a netbook simply won’t be up to the job.

AMD is also hoping to gain ground in the netbook space with its Vision range.

In many respects a netbook is best suited to those who have access to another, more powerful computer. That way the netbook can be used when you’re out and about, or relaxing in the garden, but when you need to do something a bit more heavy duty, you can use something with a bit more juice.

The laptop notebook computer is one of the greatest technological advances to come along. And you will probably find it difficult to eschew the computer if you live if the modern world, unless you are Amish. The desktop computer was a wonderful invention, but the laptop notebook computer is gaining a powerful momentum that is hard to ignore.

While people have come to use the terms laptop and notebook interchangeably to describe the portable computing devices that business owners and stay-at-home moms alike carry around, there are a few differences between the two.

A laptop computer is a portable computer that is small enough to fit comfortably in the user’s lap. They are a bit larger than their counterparts – the notebook computer. Laptop computers are normally larger to include such features as built in or removable CD ROM drives.

Most standard laptops will feature a 14 inch to 17 inch screen, a full featured keyboard, 2+ hour battery life, integrated audio system, mid to high level graphics cards, integrated modem and WiFi capabilities, and a built in or removable optical drive. Laptops offer the ability to be upgraded to some extent also.

A notebook computer is designed to be ultra-portable and ultra-lightweight. Therefore, it includes the minimal amount of features necessary to provide the greatest degree of mobility. Standard notebook computers feature 4+ hours battery life, minimal graphics system, no internal optical drive, 12 to 14 inch screen, integrated modem and network capabilities, and the smallest possible keyboard. It is also normally thinner than a traditional laptop computer.

With technology improving at such a rapid pace, though, it is now possible to include much more computing power into a smaller space. This may be one of the reasons that the line has become blurred between the laptop and notebook computers. Now, both of these mobile computing devices have simply become known as the laptop notebook.

And since the differences are so slight, there really is no harm in putting the two into the same category. Most people do not care enough to recognize the difference in the terminology anyway. They just know that they want their laptop notebook along for the ride.
