Nvidia, the #1 graphics chip maker in the computer industry, has finally decided to enter the netbook race. They have recently announced their newest platform, the ION. While it is not a revolutionary new chip (it has in fact been around a while), it’s pairing with the Intel Atom processor is what really makes it important to netbook owners and addicts.

About Ion

Ion is a combination of the current Intel Atom processors, used in most netbooks, with Nvidias 9400M mobile GPU. The 9400M is currently used in many budget laptops and is also the GPU you will find in Apple’s Macbook Pro line. The new chips will offer up 5x faster graphics as well as up to 10x faster video transcoding.

So what does this mean to you?

The Ion will allow you to run video much, much faster. For those of you that have a first generation netbook (like my HP mini), you have probably noticed that the video can cause serious hiccups. With the 9400M, you can now run HD Video in full 1080p and Nvidia even went as far as to say that the platform will be capable of Blu-Ray playback. Not only that, but Nvidia has been quoted as saying that the new platform can run Call of Duty 4 with 25-30 fps consistently. That is quite a feat considering my current netbook can barely run the simple games on Yahoo. What that also means is that this new line of netbooks should also be able to run World of Warcraft on decent quality settings. I must be honest when I tell you that this has me VERY excited.

Are there any downsides?

The only documented downside at this point has been power consumption. The new mock systems that have been tested have been exhibiting double the power consumption of previous netbooks and would cut your battery time down to about 4-5 hours for most systems. Nvidia has stated however that the Ion based netbooks will have special power saving techniques to extend the battery life, so no accurate measurement can be made until the first systems start showing up.

So when will they be out and what new models have been announced?

So far, the only time line given has been mid 2009, but we should start seeing a major crop of big name netbooks using the Ion platform soon. The leaders out of the gate will be the Lenovo S12, a new Acer, and more than likely a new Asus laptop as well, to complement their new thinner line of netbooks. I would suspect that all of the major players in the netbook race will have Ion based systems available by Christmas.

In Conclusion

The new Ion platform by Nvidia and Intel is going to be a huge step for netbooks. 5x the graphic power, 10x the video speeds, Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, and 1080p all sounds great. If you already have first generation netbook, this Christmas looks like it may be a good time to upgrade.

The netbook is actually being noticed by diehard laptop devotees. Most devoted laptop lovers might have thought – `This is it. This is the one for me`. Slowly but surely, they are being lured into the smaller and lighter realm of the netbook. For students, this can mean the difference between lugging their laptop around all day, when maybe they only have one or two classes. Or when they grab lunch, maybe they want to drop the heavy laptop off at the dorm room for when they come back to download the day`s notes. Sitting at a desk gets old after sitting behind one for several hours a day; even if there is a nice home/dorm office desk setup aside from being in classrooms. Maybe the student wants to prop up in bed and type some quick ideas or update the week`s schedule – enter the netbook. Following are the small details that make the netbook so appealing for quick tasks, updates or even as a general notebook for random thoughts or shopping lists. The netbook tends to have a 7-10 inch screen. However some manufacturers have produced a couple of models with 11-12 inch screens, which might be categorized by most as a laptop. Usually they are built to weigh a mere 2-3 pounds. This attribute alone is a big selling point for the times someone needs a computer, yet there will be no access to a desktop where one is going, therefore the point of carrying a USB stick would be moot. Now the USB can be brought along to the next destination, with the netbook not weighing much more. Linux and Windows XP are the standard operating systems for netbooks. Some have Vista installed, but the netbook`s smaller memory capacity usually does not support Vista well. Most memory on the devices is 512 MB to 1 GB (giga byte). They do have a capacity for as much as 2 GB. Most netbooks come with many standard specs that a laptop does – webcam, microphone, USB 2.0, a port for headphones and another microphone and etc. The netbook is designed to be very easy on battery life, unlike most laptops. Hence another example of the appeal of the netbook`s portability; however, this also translates to smaller processing systems, making it ideal for small daily tasks for students, business people, writers, or the busy mom typing out the grocery list. The laptop at home will be utilized later for the more heavily processing tasks. Many netbooks can be attained for US $300-500. Some do go as high as $700-800. For those who can justify the cost of the netbook as a compatible backup and new family addition to their laptop, it is a viable option. There are also many people who would benefit from saving or just weighing the pros to make a notebook the latest addition to their technology brood – students, writers, high schoolers who need extra, more convenient study time, doctors and nurses who need extra time to type up and organize notes, etc. Welcome to another technological breakthrough, just when it seemed there could never be any more additions: enter the world of the netbook, a fabulous adjunct to the notebook, and their grandfather, the good old desktop.

An Acer Netbook is a laptop computer that’s especially designed to be portable and easy to use. The Acer Group creates the brands Acer, eMachines, Packard Bell and Gateway, and is the 3rd largest PC company, as well as the second largest for notebook computers, including their netbooks.
Acer started with the Acer Aspire One, its first netbook designed to compete on a market that began with Asus Eee PC computers. These original mini-laptops took the market by storm, and the Acer Aspire One was Acer’s answer to the growing demand for small, lightweight laptops that were portable and had better battery life than standard laptops.
An Acer Netbook is now offered in one of 3 screen sizes, instead of the original 8.9″ screen. Now you can opt for a slightly larger 10.1″ or an 11.6″ screen for a larger viewing area. The earliest netbooks were often criticized for their screen size, even though the entire computers were so compact. An 11.6″ screen helps give a more full-size feeling to the screen, while maintaining the compact size and easy portability netbooks are known for. You can choose a 1024 x 600 resolution WSVGA resolution screen, or opt for a HD WXGA 1366 x 768 resolution with an LED-backlit display.
An Acer Netbook weighs less than 3 pounds. If you’ve ever carried around a full-size laptop that wasn’t a very inexpensive featherweight model, then you can appreciate the idea of a laptop that weighs less than 3 pounds! You also have a choice in battery size, which will of course affect battery life. Models with a 3-cell battery cost less, but the 6-cell battery increases the run time dramatically.
Each Acer Netbook contains some type of Atom processor, a top processor from Intel that was made for small devices. Because of netbooks’ portability, people want to be able to use them at length on the go, and there’s not always a way to plug them in every couple of hours. The Atom processor helps the battery last much longer, because it uses much less power than other types of processors. Intel’s popular Core 2 Duo processor uses almost 10 times more power than an Atom processor, making the Atom ideal for netbooks.
You can choose a less expensive Acer Netbook, or opt to pay a little more, by choosing different operating systems, hard drives and memory. Windows operating systems installed cost a little more than a Linux operating system, for instance. And you can choose hard drives ranging from about 80 Gig to 250 Gig, with larger storage commanding a higher price. Choose between 1GB and 2GB of memory–keeping in mind that more memory is always better, as it speeds operation.
You can choose from a variety of colors to suit your taste, and then enjoy using your Acer Netbook on the go, with its built-in Wi-Fi, web browsing, webcam and things like media player and picture viewers. These compact laptops let you compute on the go without lugging around a heavy laptop or paying thousands of dollars for a light model.

The industry of Personal Computer (PC) seems has great ambition to sell million of mini or small computers that seems more ergonomic and easier to meet personal needs, beside reducing energy consumption and more efficient used with internet connectivity features provided. However, some huge computer companiess consider that these issues will gives bad impact. In the stories of computer sale, some computer companies already made a ranges of computers and offered in the market with lower price that may threaten the existence of Personal Computer producer in the margin of cost and benefit that seem decrease gradually.

Those computer that become threatener is netbook or mini laptop well known as netbook. Netbook are used computer chip to operate it. User can use netbook to surf on internet, mailing, chatting and any else. Moreover, netbook computer offered in the market is in low price with approximate US$300 and able to reach common society. Even though, the computer company who sold netbook can be categorize as a small or new computer company like Asus from Taiwan.

Beside it, like or dislike huge companies of PC maker like Dell, Acer HP and even Toshiba already followed this world trend to produce notebook and netbook that people called mini notebook as the competitor of netbook. Even some PC maker already introduce “nettop”, a desktop computer that offers lower price, easier to operate and easier also to get internet access. Some computer industry analyzers suggested that new variant of computer types like netbook that offered in the market with lower price has threatened huge companies like Microsoft and Intel or HP and Dell, they have to developed more ergonomical type of computer with many function features in it.

IDC, a company which observing the flow of computer market has predicted that the category of netbook will get increase from 500.000 since 2007 to 900.00 in 2012 later. Intel also suggested that in 2011 there are will be 40 million of netbook units produce each year. These issues have made Intel Company to rethinking and have to decrease price of computer chip that can be use in netbook and nettop. With new Intel Atom chip, Intel will be able to fight with a company from Taiwan, as the C7 Chip maker that used in Via netbook. Therefore, HP,Dell and other PC maker already observed and they know what types of computer consumer like most.

am now going to buy Lenovo Ideapad S10-2 Netbook Laptop. But, I am not able to decide which operating system will help me to improve my working on it. So, will you please help me to get the best operating system from which I can get more and more faster response as well as simpler use of the operating sytem. So, just suggest me some options and their use, so I can get one of it, which is the best one.

Re: Best Winodws Operating System For NetBookHi, I think to get the best windows operating system you would need to give the configuration of your NetBook. So, that one will able to get to know which windows will give you better performance. As you wanted to get the faster response from thenetbook you need to get the operating system which will suit your notebook configuration. So, I will suggest you to give first the configuration of yournetbook.

Re: Best Winodws Operating System For NetBookI think you need to install the Windows 7 on your new Netbook. As it is the newest version of the windows operating system, it is having some or the other new features as follows: * Accessibility * Action Center * Backup and Restore * BitLocker * HomeGroup * Internet TV * Jump Lists * Language packs * Libraries * Power management * ReadyBoost * Remote Desktop Connection * Remote Media Streaming * Startup Repair * Sticky Notes * Windows Live Essentials * Windows Search * Windows Taskbar * Domain JoinRe: Best Winodws Operating System For NetBookHi, I am still using windows Xp operating system and I think that this is the better operating system of the Windows though after that Windows has launched Windows 7 and Windows Vista. It gives you user friendly environment that any other operating system. It is simple to use and provides more faster response than any other operating system. So, I think that this is more helpful operating system if you want faster response from the windows. So, just make use of the Windows xp which I think that better one.Re: Best Winodws Operating System For NetBookHello, If you ask me personally, I don’t think that windows is the best choice for netbook. If you like to change from windows then I would suggest you to get linux. This is because it uses very little RAM and hard drive space and protects you from viruses by its own. If you are using anywindows operating system then you will get usually attacked by the viruses and I don’t think that the antivirus programs would help you to achieve this. As I have this experience, I would suggest you to not use windows use other operating system such as linux.Re: Best Winodws Operating System For NetBookHi, I am also searching for the same. I am also buying the new netbook for my home use and thinking that which operating system will be suitable for this. As if you buy the netbook with the Windows 7 and then if you want to update it, it will cost you more. So, it is better to first time make sure which operating system will you like to use. That is why I am asking you which is the better operating system from windows. I have used only Windows xp till yet, so I don’t know working of Windows vista and Windows 7. So, help me to get better operating system.Re: Best Winodws Operating System For NetBookHi Henryosa, I had seen the technical specifications of the Lenovo Ideapad S10-2 on its official site. It’s powered by Intel Atom N280 processor and 1GB ram. I would recommend you to go with Windows XP Home or PRO. Won’t recommend Windows 7 because it’s over the limit of thisnetbook could handle.

would like a few suggestions regarding a purchase i wish to make for my brother. My brother recently joined a new firm and i am planning to gift him a netbook. He has an Ubuntu desktop at home so i am planning to give him an Ubuntu based netbook.Basically i want the netbook to be linux compatible in short. This is for his personal use when he is away for work and not for office work,he uses applications like firefox, yahoo, skype etc.

Re: Please suggest a good ubuntu powered netbookI bought a Dell Mini 10v’s for personal use and i can assure you i am very happy with it.The only downside is that they only come with the horrible Dell-branded Broadcom wireless cards,i recommend you to replace those with Intel wireless cards and trust me you will celebrate later.Be sure to get the solid state drive by the way if you choose to buy one,i have the samsung solid state drive on mine, the difference between mine and the conventional hard drive is very noticeable based on my experience so please take note of this.

Re: Please suggest a good ubuntu powered netbookWell it seems most of the people are fans of the Dell netbooks.Based on your requirements i would like to recommend a Samsung NC 10.I’m still using my Samsung NC10 withUbuntu installed on it every day without much issues. The life of the battery is very good and it turns off the power to the wifi card when you turn wifi off which is a very good power saving option. The keyboard is also very much easy to use compared to the slimmed down ones on the other netbooks.Hope this helps, good luck with your shopping.

The desktop computer may not be dead, but it’s certainly suffering from life threatening wounds.(dell inspiron 9400 battery)

If the desktop crawled into its nearest field hospital, the triage nurse would have to think very carefully about whether to rush it into surgery, or to lay it down gently in a corner and wait for the inevitable.(HP pavilion zv5000 battery)

It’s impossible to ignore the rise of mobile computing over the past few years. Gone are the days where a notebook computer meant questionable performance and an astronomically high price.(dell latitude d400 battery)

Notebooks are only the tip of the mobile computing iceberg, and the market is quite confusing for anyone who’s looking for a portable PC. Besides all the different notebook form factors – desktop replacement, ultraportable and so on – there’s the increasingly popular netbook category to consider. And as if that isn’t enough, you also have to consider tablets and the new smartbook category.

NB: Smartbook is a registered trademark of Smartbook AG in Germany, but here we are using smartbook as a generic term for a device which falls between smartphone and netbook.

So which platform is right for you? We’ve put together a breakdown of each mobile computing platform, highlighting the benefits and deficits of each, so you can decide which platform is best for you.

The best notebook or best laptop for you

The notebook, or laptop, is the most widely recognised and understood mobile computing device available. Although there are several categories of notebook, they all share distinct similarities, often pertaining to the hardware platform that drives them.

The vast majority of notebooks are based on Intel technology, but systems based on AMD hardware are also available at the lower end of the market. Intel has pretty much dominated the notebook market since it launched the Centrino platform back in 2003.

Not only did Centrino provide notebook manufacturers with a great mobile computing platform to build on, it also made Wi-Fi the de facto feature that it is today.

There are basically three categories of notebook – desktop replacement, ultraportable and, well, general use notebook. The desktop replacement is, as the name suggests, an alternative to a desktop computer.

As such it will come equipped with a large screen, a full size keyboard, perhaps with a full numeric keypad, a powerful CPU and a generous complement of memory.

A desktop replacement notebook will be able to do pretty much anything that a full size PC can, with the exception of playing high-end 3D games (unless it’s a specific gaming notebook).

The downside is that battery life is generally bad, probably bordering on nonexistent. Even if battery life wasn’t bad, the system is likely to be so bulky and heavy that you wouldn’t want to carry it anywhere anyway.

The ultraportable category includes all those slim and sexy models that people like to show off in executive departure lounges, or in Starbucks while they’re sipping a decaf latte. An ultraportable notebook is generally well under 2kg in weight, with many dipping below 1.5kg. They tend to sport screens that are 13.3-inch or smaller, often with LED backlighting to ensure a thin casing.

They often sport low or ultra-low voltage CPUs to ensure that the most time can be squeezed out of the thin and light battery. And they tend to be the design highlight of any notebook manufacturer’s range.

The most obvious downside of the ultraportable notebook is that all that thinness, lightness and gorgeous design comes at a price, and usually a pretty high one.

Also, those low power chips aren’t designed for heavy duty use, and can start to struggle under the weight of excessive multi-tasking. And let’s not forget that the supermodel-thin chassis doesn’t leave much room for features, with many ultraportables having no optical drive and very limited connectivity options.

Thankfully, there is a happy medium, in the shape of the general purpose notebook – the kind of workhorse machine that’s bigger and heavier than an ultraportable, but far smaller and lighter than a desktop replacement. Also, while it’s not as super-powerful as a desktop replacement, it can be far more well endowed in the processing department than an ultraportable.

General purpose notebooks tend to sport 14 or 15-inch screens, along with full sized keyboards, integrated optical drives and plenty of connectivity options around the chassis. They generally weigh around 2.5kg, which means they’re noticeably heavier than an ultraportable, but still light enough to be carried around in a backpack.

It’s always worth taking a close look at the specification of a general purpose notebook though, since some models that look like bargains are often equipped with ageing and underpowered hardware. As a general rule of thumb, anything with an Intel Core processor and upwards of 2GB of RAM should be able to cope with most things you’re likely to throw at it.

You should expect to see a DVD writer built in, at least three USB ports, integrated Wi-Fi and possibly Bluetooth. It’s pretty common to see a webcam built into the lid to facilitate video conferencing too. There was a time when a well built notebook with those features would have set you back over £2,000, but these days you can pickup something from the likes of HP or Samsung for around £600.

When Asus launched its Eee PC back in 2007, it created a whole new product category that took the tech world by storm. Within a matter of months, pretty much every technology company was rushing out a netbook product, to try and grab some of the new market share.

However, whereas the original Eee PC was designed to be a very basic mobile computer at an affordable price, the netbook has evolved into a larger, more feature rich and ultimately more expensive device.

The important thing to remember about a netbook is that no matter what size it is, or how good the screen is, it’s still limited by the hardware inside it. Most netbooks come equipped with Intel’s Atom processor and are limited to 1GB of RAM – the reason for the meagre complement of RAM, is that in order to qualify for a cut price “netbook edition” of Windows, Microsoft insists that a netbook can not ship with more than 1GB! Of course that doesn’t mean you can’t upgrade the memory post purchase.

But even with more memory, a netbook is still suited to basic computing duties, such as email, web browsing and basic document creation. So, if you’re looking to buy a computer that you can use to, say, edit your home movies and photos, a netbook simply won’t be up to the job.

AMD is also hoping to gain ground in the netbook space with its Vision range.

In many respects a netbook is best suited to those who have access to another, more powerful computer. That way the netbook can be used when you’re out and about, or relaxing in the garden, but when you need to do something a bit more heavy duty, you can use something with a bit more juice.

Because the class of laptop style computers which have been given the name “netbooks” is relatively new, there are many people who are unfamiliar with the term. While there are some consistent distinctions to be made between netbooks and classical laptops, those lines are blurring and the average user may have trouble distinguishing the difference. While it is a catch-all term, the most significant aspect of the netbook is its reduced profile. There have been what could be considered small laptops essentially since the inception of the device class, usually bottoming out around 13 inches or so when measuring screen size. In comparison, the average netbook screen is around 9 inches or so, with some as small as 7 inches and others closer to 12. As one might expect, this decrease in size leads to a hand in hand decrease in weight, allowing these laptops to cross an important line in what arguably makes laptops so important and attractive; their portability. Chances are, if you’re looking at the various netbooks being offered on the market today, portability is important to you. Now that that’s been established, let’s consider the sacrifices that are generally made to achieve this small size. Firstly, the buyer should expect to take a substantial hit in the performance of the machine when executing high stress applications such as video editing and 3d gaming. This doesn’t necessarily mean that these tasks will be out of reach, but expect longer waits during heavy data processing and lower frame rates during gaming, at least when compared to standard desktops available now. For most common applications used often by average users though, there will be little to no discernible difference in speed; tasks which fall into this category include word processing, browsing the internet, listening to music, downloading media, etc. If having a lightning fast processor is not a requisite for purchase of a netbook, but concern lies in having the disk space available to store many large files then it is important to pay close attention to the storage capacity of the models being considered. While it is not strange to find a netbook with capacity at or near that of a typical laptop, it is not especially common either. Many people use netbooks as a secondary computer and do not expect such capability. Another reason for equipping netbooks with limited storage is to cut costs which are passed on to the consumer, as netbooks are widely regarded as being much more affordable than their larger, heavier counterparts. Many manufacturers will include an option for an upgrade in this area, but even if they don’t, in most cases it is relatively easy to purchase a high capacity drive separately and install it one’s self. System memory, or RAM is similarly inhibited and just as easily remedied. If squeezing every bit of performance possible out of the machine is your goal, affordable upgrades in each of these areas will help very much. The bottom line is that users should not expect to replace a desktop computer with a netbook and enjoy all the same benefits, but for users to whom mobility is of the utmost importance or those looking to add a supplemental device to their main computer, netbooks are surely the way to go. Performance really is relative, and even today’s average netbooks blow away the big bulky laptops of just 5 years ago in that arena. With this in mind, it is easy to see how a netbook would make a great first computer for budding users.
