When buying a widescreen notebook, it can be a bit confusing to pick the right LCD. Generally, you are given a choice between WXGA, WSXGA and WUXGA notebook displays. What are these and which do you choose?
WXGA, WSXGA and WUXGA
The above acronyms are resolution standards for television and computer monitors. All of them refer to widescreen display standards: WXGA stands for Widescreen Extended Graphics Array; WSXGA for Widescreen Super Extended Graphics Array; and WUXGA for Widescreen Ultra Extended Graphics Array.
WXGA, WSXGA and WUXGA are not the only display standards for screen displays, but they are the most common in notebook computers. True to widescreen standards, all three of these have an aspect ratio in the range of 16/9 to 16/10. They mainly differ in their resolution (the number of pixels they can display on screen).
While all widescreen displays can use resolutions lower than their rated display, they provide the best image at their native resolution, which is also their maximum resolution. Keep in mind that a lower resolution is much easier on the eyes, so you will want to go with a native resolution that does not leave you squinting at the screen in your day-to-day use.
WXGA has a 1366×768 resolution, an aspect ratio of 16/9. WSXGA boasts a greater resolution at 1680×1050 and an aspect ratio of 16/10. WUXGA uses a resolution of 1920×1200 at an aspect ratio of 16/10.
What to Pick?
If you are buying a notebook computer for gaming purposes, you probably want a WUXGA screen for the sharpest image. If you are an HDTV subscriber and you plan to use your notebook computer as an HDTV receiver, WUXGA gives the very highest resolution available. WUXGA is also great for watching movies and viewing digital images due to the sharp rendering of images and pictures.
In addition, WUXGA is very convenient for multi-tasking, provided you can handle the smaller text size. The 1920X1200 resolution is perfect for working on two documents or web pages side-by-side, which can enhance productivity.
Although a WUXGA LCD seems like the obvious choice because of its higher resolution that produces more desktop space and greater amounts of detail, this is not to say that WXGA and WSXGA have nothing to recommend them. In fact, WUXGA is not for everyone.
If the notebook computer does not have a powerful mobile graphics processing unit and a 17-inch or larger LCD, high-resolution gaming and 3D rendering will be more difficult, as it takes a high-end GPU to push modern games and 3D models to 1920×1200 resolutions. As mentioned, customers with less than excellent vision are better off choosing WXGA to get the largest text display. If you want a notebook display with medium-sized text, sharp images, and less than 17 inches of physical screen size, WSXGA is a good compromise, and the 1680×1050 resolution is nothing to sneeze at, by any means.

When it comes to laptop computers, the choice of display size is one of the most important considerations you have to make. It is just as important as ram size, hard drive size, and processor speed. The display size will also heavily factor into the overall weight of the notebook computer. A larger display size means a larger physical footprint, which is more or less desireable depending on whether you need an ultraportable, mainstream, or gaming style computer. The most important factor, however, is your comfort level. A smaller screen (ultraportable size) may mean great mobility, but none of that is helpful if text or pictures appear uncomfortably small.
Types Of Displays
Due to increasing demand, more and more manufacturers are making widescreen displays available as well as standard displays. Standard TV’s and computer displays utilize a 4:3 (or 1.33:1) aspect ratio, including notebook computers.
Standard 4:3 Aspect Ratio
The standard 4:3 aspect ratio has been in use by notebook computer displays for a long time and is offered in several screen resolutions:
- 800 x 600 (SVGA) – 1024 x 768(XGA) – 1400 x 1050 (SXGA+) – 1600 x 1200 (UXGA)
Resolutions higher than 1024 x 768 can only be found in displays sized 14 inches and above. Ultraportable notebooks with displays sizes under 14 inches are unable to have high-resolution displays.
Widescreen Display
Using a 16:9 or 16:10 aspect ratio, widescreen displays can generally display about 25% more content than a standard display. Computer manufacturers offer several size displays from 8.9″, 10.6″, 11.1″, 12.1″, 13.3″, 14″, 15.4″, to 17″. These sizes are popular now with even larger sizes in the pipeline.
When used for entertainment, DVD movies in particular, a widescreen display is in its element as it shows widescreen movies in their intended 16:9 aspect ratio. This means a bigger picture, more comfort and thinner or no black bands on either side of the picture.
The widescreen display also makes it easier to edit and view panoramic images and may eliminate horizontal scrolling on your computer altogether. When editing images of normal 4:3 aspect ratio, you can simply place your GUI tools/utilities in the unused spaces on either side of an image. In any case, a widescreen display can help you increase work and play efficiency.
Another benefit of the widescreen display is evident when it comes to serious work – the ability to display two windows side by side and to drag and drop (or copy n’ paste) data without having to switch windows is invaluable.
Common Widescreen Display Resolutions
Here are the common resolutions found in :
1280 x 768 And 1280 x 800
1280 x 768 (16:9.5) and 1280 x 800 (16:10) are the two most common resolutions used in 10.6, 12.1, 13.3, 14, and 15.4-inch entry-level widescreen notebook computers. They provide about a 25% more onscreen content than standard screens with 1024 x 768 resolution.
1366 x 768
This resolution provides a 16:9 aspect ratio and a great widescreen DVD movie experience without any black bands above and below the picture.
1440 x 900
This resolution 16:10 is found only in 17″ notebooks and is positioned as entry level in 17″ widescreen notebooks.
1680 x 1050
This is currently the mainstream resolution, also 16:10, for 17″ widescreen notebook computer displays. There is a 35% increase in onscreen content compared to normal 17″ screens using a standard display resolution of 1280 x 1024.
1920 x 1200
At this time this is the highest for 17″ widescreen notebook displays, and provides a 75% increase in onscreen content when compared to a standard 17″ screen of 1280 x 1024 resolution. A great display for movies and gaming, however this relatively heavy laptop computer has tradeoffs in mobility.

Adapted to screen from the Nicholas Sparks novel of the same name, The Notebook is one of the best romantic dramas to hit the big screen in decades. Garnering high marks from a wide-range of critics, The Notebook is a funny and emotional film which deals with love, relationships, and the risks people take. James Garner turns in a notable performance as the elder man, Duke, who reads the pages of his notebook to dying nursing home resident Allie (Gena Rowlands). Overall, this is a classic “chick flick” with a dramatic twist. Set in the World War II era, The Notebook is a great film…
Duke (James Garner) regularly reads from the pages of a notebook to an older woman in a nursing home. Suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, her memories of the parts which he’s read in the past appears and disappears without order, but Duke continues to read to her because of their deep and enduring friendship.
The notebook’s story centers around the lives of a teenage boy and girl who meet at a carnival in the late-1930s. At first, Allie Hamilton doesn’t know what to think of Noah Calhoun, but she soon gives into his insistence that they go out on a date. When Noah and Allie fall deeply in love, Allie’s parents try to break up the couple. The Hamiltons are rich, and Noah and his father are from the poor side of town. Nevertheless, Allie and Noah are determined to be together.
When World War II breaks out, Noah is sent into conflict. He writes numerous letters to his love, but they go unanswered because Allie’s parents are hiding the letters as well as her replies to Noah. After several years apart, Allie becomes engaged to successful businessman. But after reading a newspaper article concerning Noah’s restoration of a historic home he once promised her, she decides to go visit him.
Allie’s visit with Noah turns both their worlds upside down when they learn the truth about the letters. Now, Allie must choose between the fiancée she truly loves and the man who is her real true love…
Actor Ryan Gosling is entertaining and likeable in his portrayal of the young and energetic Noah Calhoun. The Notebook as a film is better served by featuring his superb talents. Likewise, up-and-coming actress Rachel McAdams is brilliant in her role as Allie. The emotions of her young romance are clearly conveyed by a natural and instinctive penchant for delivering her lines in just the right way. Call it onscreen charisma or whatever, but McAdams is one to look out for in the future.
In short, The Notebook is as good a film as it is as a book. Few books translate onto the big screen as well as they read in print, so The Notebook is to be heralded for its ability to do so. Charming and easy to like, the film glorifies the romance of a young couple who find true love – a love that lasts forever. Well-produced and featuring some amazing shots of natural locations, The Notebook ranks as a definite must-see film. Do yourself a favor and go see it today…

Sneak PeekAsus U3 series notebooks are very compact and stylish notebooks with 13.3″ display and a full sized keyboard. Even though it lacks an optical drive, it remains a firm choice and provides a variety of features rarely seen on notebooks of its class.DesignOn the looks front, the Asus U3 is a very classy and elegant. The top of the lid is covered with a glossy black finish which gives it a stylish look. Whereas its inside is covered with a silver keyboard and it has eye-catching chrome highlights. Its fingerprint reader and a leather-like material surrounding the touchpad make the complete package of the laptop very attractive.Core InformationThe very first thing to notice in Asus U3 is the dual graphic setup. With just tapping a small switch on the side frame of the notebook, the U3 gives you the opportunity to select amongst the incorporated Intel graphics, or a more powerful 128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M G. This saves a lot of battery and you don’t need the battery-hungry NVIDIA chip. But you are looking up-on this laptop as a game-board then you are mistaken this device is not made for playing games.Cutting Edge TechnologyJust above the display, there’s a 1.3 megapixel webcam, with headphone and microphone ports to be found on the left side of the frame. The display is crisp and lucid and the LED backlight looks great for multimedia, particularly video substance. Contrast and color is excellent and the glossy finish combined makes Asus U3 a must have laptop. For wireless connectivity, Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g and n are provided, in addition to Bluetooth 2.0. The U3 has all the usual ports; three USB 2.0 ports, an ExpressCard slot, S-Video out, a memory card reader and FireWire. Amazingly, ASUS has further added a single HDMI port and an eSATA port which are very useful.A set of other programs in general which are kept aside for higher end notebooks are built-in HSDPA and an incorporated GPS receiver is present in the Asus U3. However you get an external DVD multi recorder in the sales package. Keep in mind though that you’ll only be left with two USB ports when this is attached it does consume battery life drastically. The 6-cell battery returned a more favorable but still not outstanding 2hr 57min. Do note that adjusting power plans in Windows Vista’s control panel should result in somewhat better statistics.ConclusionThe Asus U3 Series Notebook is a good buy but gamers and multimedia enthusiasts are better advised to take a look at the other available models before settling with this Asus U3.

The idea of purchasing a personal computer may be appealing to a lot of people, however they may feel undecided as weather to go for a traditional desktop computer or for a light weight portable notebook. Several aspects should be taken into consideration as for the purposes of such acquisition. If the main purpose of buying a computer is for occasional use, regardless if it is for work or entertainment activities, one may consider buying a traditional desktop computer taking in consideration that its price is usually lower than the portable version.
The maintenance and eventual upgrade of a desktop computer is also much easier to perform and less costly. If the buyer is looking to spend the least amount of money, definitely the desktop computer models offer more choices of finding better deals weather it is used or new. One may look around the local computer stores for special deals or may consider browsing the many possibilities offered online stores.
Perhaps the greatest feature a desktop computer has is the fact that quite often it can be upgraded and personalized to suit the user needs without having to be sent back to the manufacturer. In most cases a local authorized computer store can perform the technical changes or upgrades to satisfaction. The desktop computers are meant for work and leisure as well and regardless of its configuration or how fast it can perform, it seems that it became an everyday tool of modern times.
On the other hand, if the main reason for the purchasing of a computer is portability, then in this case the notebook will be the right choice. There are several brand names available on the market offering all kinds of configurations, from very basic up to the most sophisticated and powerful late models of notebooks. After a careful research on which model will better suit your needs, then you will still have the option to choose to buy a new, reconditioned or used unit for the sake of saving some money. Keep in mind that a reconditioned laptop purchased from a computer store, usually comes will full warranty, just like as if you had purchased a brand new model but for a much less cost.
Just like any other purchase, it is important to do a careful research to find out what exactly your needs are and what are you going to do with it. The lightweight and portable notebooks are much nicer to carry around even though they are usually more expensive. Also the lightweight models almost always have a smaller screen and a more compact keyboard than traditional models of notebooks. So, in this case if weight is not a critical issue, than you may just consider to purchase a traditional regular-model notebook as long as it meets your requirements. If you choose this later option you will certainly be saving a great amount of money.
If you are the kind of person who feels skeptical about purchasing a reconditioned computer, because it has been previously returned from the manufacturer, relax, some times there is absolutely nothing wrong with the returned unit. It may have just been a matter of model preference or some minor detail that didn`t quite match the previous owner`s preference. Keep in mind that a reconditioned notebook with a full warranty is just as good as a brand new one and maybe even better for the great discount it usually offers.
Also you may find some good deals in refurbished notebooks. Beware that the difference between refurbished and reconditioned notebooks is that the former is usually an older notebook that has been used and then reconditioned, often by a third party, and the later usually means that it had some problem, went back to the manufacturer, got fixed and now it is available at a fair discount price with full manufacturer guarantee.
The right solution for one`s computer related tasks, whether desktop or notebook, will depend mostly on one`s working or leisure needs. Search carefully for the best deals and avoid paying extra for accessories you will hardly use. Also take a look at reconditioned (full warranty) computers. The price will certainly surprise you. And the performance might too!

A laptop is the ideal replacement for your desktop computer. The greatest advantage of a laptop is its portability. Unlike desktop computers, you can easily move a laptop around your home, carry it to work or class and take it with you when you travel. Laptops are a big investment, so before buying one, you should consider many factors like the manufacturer, performance and features.
What kind of laptop user are you?
A home user wants all the features of a desktop PC in the form of a notebook. If you are a home user, then choose a notebook which is easy to carry and comes with the most basic computer applications. Students should opt for an affordable laptop which is light and durable. Frequent fliers need slim notebook models with long-lasting batteries. A business user should purchase a laptop with plenty of hard disk space and advanced security features while a gamer needs a fast processor and the latest graphics card.
What are the different kinds of laptop computers available?
Laptops for Entertainment:
Multimedia laptops are always more expensive and heavier than your standard model. These laptops come with a powerful processor, abundant memory and a large hard drive. You can use these laptops as a mobile DVD player, MP3 jukebox and a digital photo album. If you buy a TV tuner card, you can even use your multimedia notebook as a television set. These notebooks are ideal for PC gaming.
Laptops for Business:
Laptops especially designed for business use are ultra portable. These laptops are durable and more secure than the basic laptop. They are best suited for consumers who are always on the move. A good business laptop should offer a fingerprint reader or SmartCard support to prevent data theft. These notebooks usually have advanced computer applications and wireless capabilities, so you can work even when you are away from your desk.
Laptops for Home:
The home user typically uses a laptop for checking mail and browsing the web. These laptops perform general tasks. A high speed processor is an unnecessary luxury and tends to be wasted on most home users. Opt for a notebook with at least a 14-inch screen and a comfortable keyboard. These laptops are generally heavy, weighing more than 4 kg at times. Their average battery life is less than three hours.
What constitutes a good laptop?
Ergonomics:
If you are going to use your laptop extensively, then you need to be comfortable with the keys. Try a laptop with slightly larger keys to avoid straining your fingers from typing. Most laptops come with a touch pad or a tracking pointer instead of a mouse. If you are a PC gamer, buy a separate mouse which can keep up with the fast-paced action on screen.
Operating Systems:
The Windows XP Media Center Edition is a good operating system for entertainment laptops. It makes optimal use of multimedia features like TV tuners, radio tuners and media players. If you are a professional who prefers Apple notebooks but are concerned about compatibility, check out the dual boot models by Apple that allow you to install and run Windows as well as Mac OS X. If you prefer PCs, Microsoft Vista is an ideal alternative to Windows XP. Vista comes in several editions, including Vista Home Basic and Vista Home Premium for the home user, Vista Business for the professional and Vista Ultimate for the best of both worlds.
Memory and Storage:
All data and applications are stored in the RAM (random access memory). Many laptops commonly use 256 MB of RAM. Most business laptops and entertainment laptops come with 512 MB or more of RAM. The more RAM you buy, the more data you can store.
The hard drive stores all programs and files. For the average home user, a 20 GB hard drive will more than suffice. If you buy a laptop for entertainment or business purposes, a 60 GB hard drive will better serve your needs. Some entertainment laptops even have multiple hard drives for better performance. Hard drives come with different speeds. Most laptop hard drives have a speed of 5,400 rpm. However, faster hard drives go up to 7,200 rpm.
Display:
The size of a laptop is based on the size of the screen. Screen size starts as small as 10.6 inches and goes up to 20 inches diagonally. Most laptops have an LCD monitor. However, if you are using your laptop for CAD, a CRT monitor will serve you just as well, if not better. The screen resolution determines the crispness of your image. A 12.1 inch display uses WXGA resolutions (1,280 by 800). A 14 or 15 inch display typically uses WSXGA+ (1680 by 1,050), although a small number of notebook computers use WUXGA (1,920 by 1,200) instead.
Processor:
It is more difficult to upgrade a notebooks processor than it is to upgrade a desktop computer. For this reason, you should buy a processor with a speed that will best suit your use. Also, it is wise to choose a processor with less battery consumption. Processors with 1.4 to 1.6 Ghz are preferred by most users.
Battery:
Lithium ion batteries are commonly used in laptops. The average battery life is about 3 hours. It takes around 75 minutes to fully recharge a lithium ion battery.
Graphics Card:
A graphics card, sometimes referred to as a video adapter, is responsible for generating the images you see on a laptops display. For businessmen who need to do lot of presentations, a graphics card containing 32 or 64 MB of dedicated memory is the right choice. There are also specially designed cards for gaming. These cards are expensive and should be avoided unless you require excellent graphics.
USB Ports:
Laptop computers come with at least one USB port so that you can connect peripherals to the notebook. Recent models have a FireWire connection that lets you transfer digital information from camcorders or MP3 players.
Optical Drives:
Most laptops come with either a CD-ROM (compact disc, read-only memory), a CD-RW (compact disc, re-writeable) or a DVD-ROM (digital versatile disc, read-only-memory). The DVD+RW/+R with CD-RW is a combination drive which will read a CD or a DVD and write data to a DVD as well.
Modem:
Laptops are available with integrated modems for dial-up connections, Ethernet ports for cable internet and DSL and wireless modems for Wi-Fi connections. Many business laptops also have a cellular wireless modem so you can browse at broadband speeds with just a mobile phone signal.

The worlds most low-cost notebook computer Now Available

The notebook computer industry’s poster child is Asustek Computer’s(from: http://www.office-products-suppliers.com/buy-computer/) Eee PC, which was introduced last year and sold 350,000 PCs in its first quarter. The cheapest Eee PC, for $300, has an 800MHz Intel processor, 512M bytes of RAM and 2G bytes of flash storage.

The Impulse NPX-9000 notebook computer has a 7-inch screen and comes with the Linux OS. It has a 400MHz processor, 128M bytes of RAM, 1G byte of flash storage and an optional wireless networking dongle. It includes office productivity software, a Web browser and multimedia software.

There’s a caveat though — it has to bought in bulk, in units of 100. The notebook computer is available on Alibaba.com through the online store (from)of Taiwanese company Carapelli Ltd.

The cheapest notebook computer to date was known to be One notebook computer Per Child’s XO notebook computer, available at $188 for a limited time late last year. While a technological landmark, it had some hardware limitations like a slow processor and limited graphics capabilities.

The notebook computer hints towards a trend of lowering PC prices. Last week, a company called CherryPal introduced a $249 mini-desktop, also running a 400MHz processor, with 256M bytes of RAM and 4G bytes of internal flash storage.

In a recent interview with the IDG News Service, former OLPC CTO (from: http://www.office-products-suppliers.com/buy-CTO)Mary Lou Jepsen said she would bring out a $75 notebook computer by 2010. Now running her own company, Pixel Qi, she cited the falling prices of RAM and components as a way to bring down notebook computer prices.

A company is now selling what it calls the “world’s cheapest notebook computer,” which at US$130, is not a bad deal if you can bear some hardware limitations.

Welcome the http://www.office-products-suppliers.com/ to buy the best office products & supplies. It makes your business easier

Rugged laptop computers have been a necessity for mobile users that are typically in rough conditions such as military or construction. However, other mobile users should strongly consider rugged laptop computers as they provide added protection for everyday mishaps. It is a common event to drop or spill a drink on a notebook. If it is a standard notebook that is not designed to be durable like rugged laptop computers, then it will likely be destroyed since a standard notebook is not a very tough notebook. Because of the way notebooks are designed repairs are impractical and cost more then simply replacing it. However this is effectively doubling the price of a notebook computer.

Consider this scenario: You are at home and enjoying a cup of coffee while using your laptop. For one reason or another, your coffee has spilled onto the keyboard of the laptop. Hot coffee and sugar are now flooding the keys and likely the internal components of your laptop and have now rendered your laptop useless. Work can no longer be completed and you will now be losing time trying to replace the laptop as well as money. If you had a tough notebook, you could simply rinse off the coffee you spilled and continue work as normal.

Though the purchasing price of rugged laptop computers are initially more expensive when compared to the standard version, the long term is what is being invested in. Being designed as a tough notebook, the only concern from drops or shocks would be mere scratches on the surface of the notebook which will not affect performance. Water damage is no concern as rugged laptop computers are designed to be used in the rain. This should be important to all mobile users, not simply for mobile users that work in extreme conditions.

You are constantly on the go and need something portable. However, being on the go means your equipment has a higher chance of accidents that are not always in your control. In the case of a notebook, it would be prudent to purchase a tough notebook to minimize the concerns of having a functional portable computer. This ultimately provides the needed peace of mind for the mobile user.
